View Full Version : Advice needed on how to get the best sound out of an MI Active

Guys, I was hoping I could get some advice to improve the sound I'm getting off my M1 Active pickup that I recently purchased and had fitted professionally. I play a relatively inexpensive but beautiful sounding Blueridge BR-163 acoustic. I went for this model as it had an acoustic sound equal to many guitars that were much more expensive. The woods are really light and body is very resonant, so I was hoping that the M1-A would be a great addition to it, and help me amplify the acoustic sound accurately.

However I've found that the tone I'm getting off the pick-up is very nasal, with a huge amount of noise coming from the body of the guitar. This happens whether I'm going through a guitar amplifier or directly through a P.A. It even picks up the sound of my thumb moving on the back of the guitar neck. As I play alot of Irish music with quiet single line runs this has become quite a problem. It's not about my technique, as I've had a number of people try it out (with the same issue) and I'm a fairly delicate player. The only way I can get around this in a live set up is to get the engineer to literally pull the treble, mids and often bass right down - so much so in fact that I'm losing all of the guitars character. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Just so you know, the pick-up is firmly attached, and placed towards the neck in the soundhole as it is for most other players who use this pick-up. I had thought of getting the Venue DI, but then the electronics of my guitar would cost more than the guitar itself.

I'ld really appreciate any advice / help / or hints. I feel that the problem isn't with the pick-up or guitar as I've heard both independently in other situations and they sound fantastic. I think I just need some advice on how to get the best from the marriage of both. Thanking you guys in advance,

I just wanted to say a public thank you to the service department of L.R. Baggs who had a look at my pick-up about the problem above and sorted it out. The service was fantastic and I really appreciate the lengths the team went to to check out my equipment. The sound off my M1-Active now is superb, everything I could have wished for. I'm continually asked at gigs how do I get the pristine, realistic acoustic guitar sound I now have. Needless to say I'm very happy to refer the business to L.R. Baggs, especially considering the fantastic customer service they offer. Thanks once again guys. Glenn

Hi Atenspro,

No adjustments were recommended. His original pickup had a fault and has been replaced.

I have an M1A and have the same problems as mentioned by Glenn. It was professionally mounted in my Martin D35. My partner with a lower quality Martin with built-in electronics has a far better sound quality. They don't even mesh well. I have gone straight into the board, w/ and w/o the Para DI with poor results. It sounds thin and with too much mid. What help can you suggest. The band wants me to consider replacing the pk-up.

Hi bhinhb,

If your M1A is producing a sound that is full of hollow, honking midrange, it may have the issue that Glenn encountered. Please call me or Caleb in the LR Baggs tech support department at 805-929-3545 to make arrangements for warranty repair or replacement.

Hello Bryan! I see that this thread is from 2011, but I'm having the same issue. I bought my M1 back in 2012. Could it just be a low battery? It's been used very lightly, as I go back and forth between my electric and acoustics, and have rarely plugged the acoustic in (for church gigs.)

Thanks for joining the forum. Please clarify the symptom and say what you have done to confirm the issue.

What amplification equipment do you play through?

Does your M1 compare poorly to another M1 or are you basing it on another reference? If so, please describe it.
